Most brides end up spending between $3 to $6 per slice on their wedding cakes (although some cakes can cost as much as $15 a slice!), and most cake designers will require you to plunk down between 25 and 50 percent as a deposit. When you discuss numbers with your wedding cake designer, be sure to find out if delivery and accessory rentals are included in the quote, or if you'll be charged extra (and make sure these financial details are added to your contract so you won't be surprised later!).
The more complicated the wedding cake, the more you'll pay. Fondant is generally more expensive than buttercream icing, and if you want elaborate molded shapes, vibrant colors, and/or handmade sugar-flower detailing, you'll pay for the cake designer's time and labor. A good cost-cutting option is to order a cake for 150 people, and your guests will be served "half-servings." Or, have the cake of your dreams made on a small scale for a price you can comfortably afford, and then order sheet cakes of the same flavor to be cut in the kitchen.
